Apptronik founded; NASA contract work begins
Apptronik is founded in Austin, Texas as a spin-out from the University of Texas Human Centered Robotics Lab. The company immediately wins contracts with NASA to develop actuators and robot systems, including work related to the Valkyrie humanoid robot programme at NASA Johnson Space Center. This NASA heritage shapes Apollo's core actuator architecture.
2018–2021
R&D phase: actuators, exoskeletons, and early bipeds
During this period, Apptronik develops and sells specialised actuators to other robotics companies and research institutions, builds prototype exoskeleton systems, and develops early biped prototypes including the DRACO platform. Revenue from actuator sales and NASA contracts funds the work that will eventually become Apollo.
